We had an enjoyable but hot day (mid to upper 80s) on Indiana’s longest rail trail (62 miles). The trail started out as part of C&O railroad and was discontinued in 1985. In 1993, a nonprofit company Cardinal Greenway Inc. was created and purchased 60 miles of the trail. In 2011, the 60+ mile trail was completed. Note: section of the trail was opened as work was completed. To read more about the trail click on link: History – Cardinal Greenways
John and I were within 10 miles of the Lasantville trail head which had parking, restroom, bike repair, benches, shelter, etc.
The trail condition was nicer than the bumpety bump bump roads in Indiana which was nice. Your backside actually hurts after riding the 6 miles around the campground. No pain involved with this trail 🙂
Unfortunately, we only road about 7 to 7 1/2 miles. Mostly due to a tree that was blocking the path. A few days ago, Indiana had extremely high wind. Up to 50 miles an hour in some areas. In the campground, a few trailer canopies tore…
The trail had similar incline to the Sparta Elroy bike trail. Link to Sparta Elroy bike trail which has a great picture of the mile long tunnel… Elroy-Sparta State Trail | Wisconsin DNR.
I couldn’t resist taking pictures. I hope you enjoy.
