Today, I saw 6 deer in the park. This includes a buck that had just started getting it’s antler. The antlers had the velvet and weren’t that largest yet.
This made me think of pictures I took last week of the July full moon.
July full moon was on Sunday July 21st, 2024 and called the Buck Moon.
Buck Moon History
- 1930 Maine Farmers’ Almanac started publishing the “Indian” names for the full moons. This has stuck around and continue to be used.
- July full moon is when new antlers form on buck deer
- Sometimes also called “Thunder Moon” due to the summer frequent thunderstorms.

The photo below was taken from our Summit Lake State Park Indiana campsite. I’m not able to adjust light setting to make the moon crisper looking. Someday, I’ll buy a camera that has all the bells and whistles. Or have John take a picture with his SLR 🙂
