Hmm Donuts!!!

On my way to the Danville’s Farmers Market, I found another donut shop — Royal Donuts.

Royal Donuts has been around since 1973 (Linda’s Bakery also opened in 1973). During Covid, Royal Donuts shut down and decided not to re-open. In 2022, Royal Donuts was re-opened by another family and has been running strong since.

I bought myself Royal Donuts version of an Eclair. It’s not what we would typically think of an Eclair. Normal Eclairs are made using Choux Pastry. Choux pastry is a cooked paste containing eggs, water, butter and flour that puffs up with hollow center for the filling. Royal Donuts does not use a Choux Pastry. Instead uses fried yeast dough in the shape of a long john donut. For me this wasn’t an issue because I like yeast dough…. The donut was very tastee. I think I liked the yeast donut better than the Choux Pastry.

Picture on the left is Choux pastry and right yeast donut.

This is a typical eclair with very hollow center. The outside has an eggy taste and almost crispy.
Royal Donuts version of a Eclair. You’ll notice it’s a yeast Long John donut. Still very delicious.

The interior was more inviting than the exterior. The exterior was painted in pastel pink and nothing modern or fancy. They did have a wonderfully decorated food / delivery truck. The interior was pastels, very clean and inviting.

The outside of the building was a fun pastel pink. The parking area was a on a hill and hard to get in and out. Partly because the drive through line was very long.
The Food Truck / Delivery truck was wildly designed and can’t be missed.
The inside was very clean with pink everywhere

I could tell that all the donuts were made in the back of the store vs. Jack’s donuts which was done in a manufacturing facility. I arrived around 9:30 am and some of the donuts were being made in the back. If a customer didn’t see a donut they wanted, the store made the donut for them.. The display cases made my mouth water, were clean and had no gnats or flies. Jack’s donuts were as inviting and clean – not totally unacceptable just not as nice.

Showcase with cake donuts. Including a Lemon Cake donut that looked interesting.

Showcase had Eclairs, Bismarcks, frosted cookies and large glazed cinnamon rolls.

Royal Donuts vs. Jacks Donuts vs. Linda’s Bakery

Jacks and Royal donut’s only serve donuts. Where Linda’s does a large variety of baked good. So, the comparison will only be done on donuts vs. total store goods.

Tied for 1st place – Royal Donuts and Linda’s Bakery. Note: Linda’s bakery makes true Bismarck using Choux pastry.

2nd place would be Jacks Donuts.
