Dolliver overlooks the Des Moines River Valley south of Fort Dodge and north of Lehigh in Iowa. It is unique in Iowa for its natural canyon bluffs, natural geologic formations, flatlands, and Native American mounds. The park has a campground, but there are only 30 short electric sites. We just hiked the 1 mile Copperas Trail with the copperas beds. The copperas beds are a unique geological formation of iron cemented pebbles in Dolliver Memorial State Park. It is named for the copperas (Iron Sulfates) that form on the surface. The slate layers of the bluffs also contain petrified wood. We will probably go back to hike other trails.
