Campfires & Wind

Cedar Bluff State Park, Kansas – Home of the never-ending wind..

Cedar Bluff is a beautiful park that is dry and windy. The ground has just started to turn green, and the reservoir water level is low.

Having a campfire required waiting for a less windy (still windy though) day. Well at least for us.

The weekend before leaving there was some young kids who started a fire in their ring that did not look safe. Essentially too much wind, no adult supervision, no water, and instead of having a fire inside the ring the fire was on top of the ring. I could see the embers flying at least 5 feet away. John talked to the camp host who then talked to the folks at the site. It didn’t fully solve the concern though. Reason: An adult was now present and water available. The problem was the kids were swirling sticks in the air with embers falling off the end. Good News – no grass fire that day!

Fortunately, we found one day with less wind. It was still windy, so we had a bucket and gallon jug of water next to the fire. Also, John made a small fire. Just enough for us to have hot dogs.

I couldn’t resist taking selfies.
