Yellowstone National Park Day 15: Part 3 – Beaver False Alarm

Yellowstone National Park, WY, June 2025

Spoiler Alert: It was a Beaver false alarm.

John was taking pictures of a male and female Barrow’s Goldeneye Duck from Fishing Bridge. The ducks were diving to feed, and it looked like they stirred up a stick from the bottom. A short time later, Kate started yelling about a Beaver.

It turns out that both John and Kate were wrong. It was a muskrat. It is hard to tell with the lighting and resolution, but the face is paler on the lower left and right, and the tail is not flat.

It was too dark for the Barrow’s Goldeneye Ducks to turn out very clear, but it was a good low light test for the camera.

After seeing the “Beaver” go under Fishing Bridge, Kate ran to shore to look under the bridge for it. In the process, she scared the poop out of a Canada Goose. John caught pictures of it fleeing out from under the bridge and honking in terror.
