Yellowstone National Park Day 19

Yellowstone National Park, WY, June 2025

The main goal of today was to hike Artist Point, Point Sublime and Lily Pad Lake which is located in the Canyon Village area.

Artist Point is on a wide paved path attached to a large parking lot on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon (of Yellowstone). It is a canyon, and it is grand. It is not as grand as the actual Grand Canyon. The best view from Artist is on a rock promontory that looks down the canyon towards the Lower Falls.

Towards and away from the Lower Falls panorama views.

Leading away from the Artist Point path is a dirt trail that leads to Sublime Point and to lakes on the south side of the canyon. The views along the way are amazing. Much of the canyon is white, yellow, orange, or red due to a combination of iron oxides and cyanobacteria.

One mile along the southern canyon rim, and there are no railings along the trail.

But, there appears to be a selfie station about every 10 feet. There were thirteen selfies in this photo set. Someone might need to attend Selfies Anonymous.

(Yes, that is eleven; just keep reading.) And some pictures of Kate’s hapless unsuspecting selfie victim.

You can not even pose dramatically in peace these days. Everyone has a camera.

As you hike down the canyon towards Sublime Point, the canyon becomes less colorful and more forested.

Kate stood near the edge, so you can see the drop offs.

We did not see or hear many birds. We are not sure whether the area is too busy or just not very hospitable. The insects were mostly mosquitos, but we did run across a moth. He was not doing so well. It is probably hard to fly in the thin air.

As you go further down the trail to Sublime Point, the views back into the canyon are still colorful.

Sublime Point is only 350 feet higher than Artist Point, but all the ups and downs make it feel like quite a bit more. The view at Sublime Point is nice, but it does not compare to the views in the canyon.

On the hike back, we took a 0.6 mile side trip to see Lily Pad Lake. The name is accurate. It has lily pads, and not much else. Well, clearly, it has a selfie station.

On the drive out, we stopped at the Upper Falls. Like Sublime Point, the falls are pretty, but they do not compare to the striking view of the Lower Falls and canyon.

You are surprised that even the Upper Falls has a selfie station, aren’t you?

John thinks she might be stalking this guy.

The much smaller Crystal Falls is visible from the same viewing point.

John is putting Kate on a selfie diet. No more than ten selfies per day.
