Yellowstone National Park Day 35

Yellowstone National Park, WY, June 2025

The big activity of the day was for John to practice with his new camera. The decision was to get up around 7 am and be in the Hayden Valley by 8 am to view the wildlife in the sage brush. Last time, we saw at least 5 Sandhill cranes, coyotes, birds galore, wolves, etc.

This time we actually got up at 7 am and was in the area by 8 am Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of wildlife activity. One tour group said there was a wolf laying in the sun on the hill. I took a picture but you can’t tell for sure if it was a wolf or something else.

After these pictures, we went back to the trailer for John to see how his pictures turned out. John made a few modifications, and we went back out for more pictures. This time to a place that had ducks and a lone muskrat dragging grass along the water.

We went back to the trailer again for John to view the pictures and eat lunch (pork chops, veggies and baked beans). John still wasn’t happy with the pictures and made additional adjustments to his camera. Then back out we went again.

We started out with the pond that had the ducks from above. I did not take any pictures. Then, we drove towards the East Entrance hoping to see something interesting.

We came across another road jam. This time due to 2 grizzly bears mating. We did not stop and continued to Overlook Butte. From Overlook Butte, I could see the cars backup. I decided to take a quick look to see if the grizzlies could be observed. I saw two grizzlies along the waterfront. No hanky panky was going on.

We saw quite a few birds including a mountain bluebird which is very pretty but hard to photograph because the bird continuously moves around.

We left and started our drive back to the camper. When we were close to the campground turn, we saw a large white bird fly by. So, the plan changed and we decided to drive to the bridge looking for the bird.

It turns out that we saw a pelican. Initially there were 2 pelicans. Then 3 more pelicans joined in. I was too late to get the splashing around pictures. But I did get a couple good videos.

The video below was one of my favorites. You will notice 2 pelicans and a duck in the background dancing. Then, the pelican in the middle does the best dance wiggle of them all.

Finally, we went home and did the most important activity of the day — Feed the Cats 🙂
