Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, SD, August 2025
The weather in South Dakota changes on a flip of a dime. Last night and this morning we were not supposed to have rain. Guess what? It rained. So, we had a wonderful breakfast while we waited for the weather to clear up. The weather started to clear up around 10 am. Around that time, our campground loop started clearing out. By 4 pm which is checkout time for campers, the loop had at most 4 campers in it.
We decided to see what birds was at Lake Vermillion dam on the east side of the lake. We saw a blue heron fly away along with sand pipers on the dam. It was extremely windy. Because of the wind, we decided not to take bird pictures and will come back another day when there is less wind.
We did see a fisherman using a net to catch fish. I’m not sure if he was trying to catch bait or fish.

We then went to the west side of the lake to the fisherman’s beach. It’s not really a beach but an area where boats can be attached next to the shore. This side of the lake had a really nice grassy path along the lake that we walked. We didn’t see any major wildlife other than a 13 striped squirrel giving John the evil eye and a turtle.
I thought you would like a couple photos from the walk.
