Lawrence Farmers Market

Lawrence, KS October 2025

Lawrence, Kansas has the oldest running Farmers Market in Kansas. The market started in 1976 with 3 farmers selling vegetables from the back of their trucks.

Now the market has 49 vendors. Many of the vendors are still selling agriculture products ranging from vegetables, fruits, honey, meats, mushrooms, flowers, etc. The market also includes baked goods, kettle corn and hot meals.

One station focused on peppers of all kinds including Ghost peppers. Needless to say, I was not buying from the pepper booth. I’m a wuss when it comes to really hot peppers. Another station had orange squash. I’ve only seen them in green variant that mom cooks.

Most of the vegetable stands were fairly expensive. I did buy 2 items. Purple peppers (2 for $1) and Watermelon Radishes (bundle of 3 for $3). Watermelon radishes have a red inside with white exterior skin. Purple peppers are a different variant of peppers. Like green peppers, as they ripen and become sweeter, and the peppers turn an orange-ish purple in color. I plan to pickle the watermelon radishes and use the peppers for fajitas or stir-fry. The same station had other vegetables for sale. I did not buy any of them.

They did have a couple booths with more of a craft feel. One person was making wool yarn from her pet sheep’s fur. She demonstrated how to use the spinner which had a foot peddle. Another station had wreaths made out of dried flowers.

My favorite sign came from a vendor who was selling eggs that were Tariff Free!

Overall Lawrence Farmers Market was one of the better farmers markets that we have been to. I like that the market had a lot of agriculture vendors vs. crafts. The other advantage was that the market was well organized. The downside though is that people in Lawrence do not pick up after their dogs. Needless say a large dog pooped next to the side walk and I stepped in it. When walking back to the car, it was evident that other people also stepped in it. When we rode our bikes earlier in the week, I saw a person walk their large dog who did a #2 and not pick up. Uck!!

Finally, one last selfie picture
