Bluebird Trail

Hillsdale State Park, KS, October 2025

This week has been and will be a week of rain. It rained Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Rain is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The Sun will hopefully come out on Thursday in time for us to prepare to move to a different campsite within the same park.

Today consisted of low clouds and no sun, but no rain. So, we went for a 5 mile hike / walk on the Bluebird trail. The Bluebird trail interweaves around the campgrounds, along the road and various portions of the lake. We contemplated bringing the binoculars and wish we did later.

When at the beach, we saw a Bald Eagle hunting. Throughout the walk we observed coots, blue heron, egret, lots of fishing jumping (I saw about 1 foot of the fish out of the water – very cool), woodpeckers, northern flicker, etc. We did not see any bluebirds :-). Next time we will bring at minimum binoculars.

The trail had two bridges that ran along the road. The bridge was on the older side but was sturdy. One was missing part of a plank.

All in all, it was a good walk on a gloomy day between rain days.
