Pomona Lake, KS, October 2025
It’s another rainy day that should last through tomorrow afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for high winds (20 to 39 mph with gusts up to 45) between 7 pm tonight until 10 am tomorrow, so I thought it would be a good day for a road trip before the weather gets even worse.
On our drive from Clinton State Park to Hillsdale State Park, we saw a sign for Pomona Lake which also indicated that the lake had a campground. While driving we decided to look into Pomona Lake campground to determine if the campground would be a decent option for staying on our drive south from Wisconsin. Pomona Lake Campground is run by the US Core of Engineers. I talked to a couple who said Pomona had a great campground and they highly recommend staying there. Also, they said the Green Acres Restaurant has great fried chicken.
Our first stop was at Green Acres whose full name is “Breck’s Green Acres Restaurant”. I believe the restaurant started out as a supper club and transitioned into a family diner. The prices were very reasonable, the waitresses were attentive, the facility was on the older side but clean.
Based on the couple I talked too, I ordered the 2 piece broasted chicken which came with a side, vegetable of the day, and 1 trip to the salad bar for only $7.99 plus tax. For the meal price the salad bar awesome. The salad bar even had ham to put on the salad. Other than salad and all the fixing, the salad bar had coleslaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, vanilla pudding, cottage cheese, imitation crab salad and couple more salads. And you were given a decent size plate vs. a bowl to use.

The waitress stopped by and let us know it was taking a little longer because the chicken was in the fryer and were getting a fresh batch. Less than 10 minutes later we had our meal. I chose dark meat. The chicken was fantastic – juicy, very hot and tasty. John had white meat which was on the dry side and tough, like chicken leather. Both of us got Fries which were OK, but they were not great. I think the oil was on the cooler side which caused the fries to be a little greasy. Overall, I was very happy with my meal.
Pomona Lake is within a few miles of Green Acres. So off we went in the rain to explore Pomona Lake. The lake and park itself looked like a nice place to visit. The first place we stopped was Outlet Campground which turned out to be blocked off and closed. I was hoping to drive through it since this is the only campground open through October 31st. The reason for the closure was the electrical was being upgraded to 50 amp. We did notice a lot of trees. Most likely, this means that we would not have Starlink Internet, and we would have to rely on the hotspot.

We turned on the hotspot, and it had no internet. This would not work out well unless we would like to be totally disconnected for a few days or weeks.
We continued onto Michigan Campground which requires going over the damn. We made a mistake of stopping at the first bathhouse and discovered it has been winterized and not locked. Unfortunately, John used the toilet before noticing the water was turned off and toilets winterized. Oops!! Glad it was a number 1 not 2.
Michigan Campground typically closes at the end of September. This year Michigan Campground is open through October 31st due to the electrical updates in Outlet Campground. The campground had less than 10 campers. None of the RV sites looked long enough for our camper and cars, and many sites were narrow. The campground is located next to the lake but unfortunately the campsite does not have a view of the lake. Again, too many trees to get good internet.

Most likely we will not stay at Pomona Lake, but we will visit.
I figured John deserved a treat since I picked the restaurant. On the way back to camper, we stopped at Walmart. John got a small lemon bundt cake. I thought he should pretend to be a zombie and eat the brain cake 🙂
