Hillsdale State Park, Kansas, October 2025
There are no campsites next to the lake in the Sunflower Campground at Hillsdale State Park. There is a short, maybe 1/4 mile trail that goes to the lakeside from either corner of the campground. The area along the trail and the lake is mowed with a picnic table to sit at. Without much difficultly, you can walk along the shore for maybe 1/4 to a 1/2 mile in either direction.
There is a good variety of birds in the area. We have seen or heard Seagulls, Great Blue Herons, Northern Flickers, Belted Kingfishers, American Robins, Bald Eagles, Osprey, Canada Geese, and American Coots, to name a few. We saw a larger bird that Kate thinks might have been an owl. Based on the calls her phone IDs, it is probably a Barred Owl.

None of the birds on the shore let us get close, and the water birds were maybe 1/4 of a mile away across the water.

We plan to go back again on a nice day to sit and see what gets close enough to photograph.
