The Debate: Day Light Savings?

Tomorrow, we leave for Alabama and it is Day Light Saving. The question becomes do we get up at DST adjust time of 7 am or not.

We both grudgingly decided on the adjust 7 am. In retirement neither of us enjoy getting up that early anymore.

I have to ask… Are you for or against adjust the clock in the spring and fall? Please add your comments to this post.

Until 2006, life became even more complicated when traveling through, living in or talking with folks in Indiana. The state is split into 2 time zone (east and central) and only part of the state adjusted for Day Light saving time (the areas near Chicagoland). The part of the state I lived in did not adjust for Daylight Saving Time. Part of the year, I would be the same time zone as my family in Wisconsin and the rest different. Talk about confusing…

Daylight Saving Time (DST) became a federal law in 1966 as part of The Uniform Time Act. There has been a federal push to remove DST, but the act has not passed. The question becomes: How did Indiana get away with not following a federal law?

Apparently, the law allows for states to “opt out” of DST. But does not allow for states to permanently create a law to continue with DST (at least until the Unform Time Act has been removed). There are only 2 states that do not observe DST: Arizona (excluding Navajo Nation) and Hawaii. Many of US territories also do not observe DST.

What do you think? Should we observe DST or not? Since John would like more sleep tomorrow, I think he would vote for no change :-).

  1. I like the longer daylight hours. Loosing an hour of sleep no problem. Now you have something to look forward to. Extra hour of sleep this fall!!

  2. i have 6 clockes just in my kitchen, 1 in living room, watch and 1 clock in bedroom, 1 clock in basement, 1 clock in Brendas room, 1 wall clock in garage and 2 clocks in the cars. For godsake leave the clocks alone!!! I am retired and I need to downsize I guess.
