Wellington, OH, July 2026
We got back from Lorain, Ohio and both decided on a nap since we stayed up late and got up early. Well for me, the nap didn’t happen. Too many interruptions like locking the trailer door and Mackie deciding to take a big dump that stunk up the bedroom. (The last part might have been TMI.)
I decided to go for a walk. I ended up at the visitor center looking into enrolling in the Kayaking excursion on Friday. Here, I learned about Judge Findley. In the 1920s, Findley purchased 800 acres of farmland with the hopes of bringing the land back to diverse woodland. In the 1930s, Ohio Forestry, CCC, and Findley took on the challenge of planting 1/2 millions trees. The land was then named Findley State Forest. In the 1950s, the park was renamed to Findley State Park.

When I left the visitor center, I walked the nature trail located next to the center. Turns out the nature trail is extremely short and primarily consists of a small pollinating garden. My guess would be <.2 miles.

Looking at the map, I decided to follow the blue trail to the boat ramp which isn’t that far from our campground loop.

The walk through the woods was pretty, it had a few cool bridges and a couple muddy spots due to the rain. Along with way, I saw blue markers and brown markers. So, I’m thinking “good. I’m still going the correct direction.”

I really enjoyed the walk through the woods until I came out at the road. Not by the boat ramp, but next to the Findley sign with the Sasquatch. This was the opposite direction of where I planned to be.

I should have realized something was astray when I saw a sign that said “Next Tee” with an arrow and a downed tree. A minute later I saw a path to a frisbee golf basket. When I saw this, I thought “hmm, I thought Frisbee golf was closer to the park entrance. The park must also have some near the boat ramp. It kind of sucks to have to climb over a branch!”

I decided not to follow the trail back to the visitor center; I was worried that 10 miles later I would end up someplace even further from home. I followed the road back to the campground which was about a 1 mile walk.
Along the way, I stopped to take pictures. These pictures aren’t as cute as the baby raccoons wrestling around in the street from a few night ago. I do like how the park tries to beautify things. For example, the flower boxes on the bridge.

Every Sunday, the park has an outdoor church service. As a kid, I remember Grandma showing me a pulpit. Stating that her Dad used it while preaching in the woods near the still. She proceeded to show me these cool tiny metal goblets that they used to drink the spirits. Grandma was spinning the goblet in her finger like a pro.

About 1/2 mile further, I finally saw the visitor center and was happy to be close to home where I had air conditioning.
As for “Where did I go wrong?” with my hike. If you look at the map, there are multiple blue trails with very close colors. I think I took the lighter blue trail vs. staying on the darker blue trail.
