It sounds like it should be a cocktail, but it is a red-footed cannibalfly. They are also called bee panthers because they hunt bees. They are part of the robber fly, or assassin fly, family. The name reflects that they prey on other insects, including other robber flies, and ambush them in flight.
Ambushing a flying insect is specifically what caught my attention. Kate and I were walking on the boardwalk at the Heron County Park when I saw a bee get snagged out of the air by something fast enough to be barely visible. I did not photograph the aerial attack, but I saw where it landed. Unfortunately, the camera focused more on the reed and bee, so the robber fly is slightly out of focus. (The last image is duller in color and contrast because a cloud passed in front of the sun.)
