Yellowstone National Park Day 12

Yellowstone National Park, WY, May 2025

We spent most of the morning and afternoon doing needed chores like figuring out health insurance, purchasing travel insurance for states where our health insurance does not cover us, etc.

We ended up going on sunset hike hoping to see animals that are most active in the evening like the pine martin.

We went to Storm Point trail which is about 5 or so miles from the campground. We’ve seen a pine martin at Storm Point before.

The trail had more people than we would like because they might scare off the animals. We also had a bison on the trail next to the parking lot. So, we had to walk around to another trail entrance to start the hike.

The first thing we noticed was that the Western Grebe was in Indian Pond fishing again.

We then started walking the pine forest area first. Looking for Pine Martin scat and hoping to see the pine martin. We did not find any fresh scat nor a pine martin. John waited in the area of the pine martin for around 15 or so minutes, just in case the pine martin showed up.

I noticed a little further down the trail a ravine with bones. Proof that a bear or other animals were in the area.

We continued walking the trail to the yellow-bellied marmots. The marmots were out sunbathing. John was able to take quite a few nice shots including a sunset photo. Because it was dusk, other evening animals were coming out such as the elk in the field behind the marmots.

The guard marmot was a bit lazy. John said he saw the marmot sneaking Cheetos and beer when the other marmots were not looking.

A small marmot appeared to be playing king of the mountain. Sadly, a bigger marmot pooped on his parade, literally.

As the sun set, the marmots started glowing in the setting sun.

Until they were silhouetted in a blaze of light.

I saw a Townsend Solitaire bird in the tree next to me.

Additional sunset pictures.

I hope you enjoyed Day 12 photos.
