Yellowstone National Park Day 15: Part 2 – Canada Goose-zilla Returns!

Yellowstone National Park, WY, June 2025

We went to the pull-off in Hayden Valley where we saw the juvenile Trumpeter Swans because we saw Green-winged Teal ducks there. John got a grainy and poorly exposed picture one afternoon while trying to photograph the swans. There were a few of them there today, but they were far away.

Kate pointed out into the field at a flying bird. After some confusion and photographs of a flying seagull, it turned out that a White-faced Ibis had flown in and landed in the marshy river grass. Since there were no animals between the pull-off and rivers edge, John risked his life climbing down a near vertical slope to get Kate closer pictures of the White-faced Ibis.

John crept closer, taking aim as he approached, just like Elmer Fudd.

and closer …

And closer … Hu-hu-hu-hu, John’s hunting a Ibis!

John also took some videos. The Ibis moving in a jerky motion probing for edible things in the mud. Increasing the ISO and the shutter speed might have made the pictures more crisp. The video settings need more experimentation.

No, that is not Canada Goose-zilla. The White-faced Ibis is just small

Sadly, it was a windy day, so the photographs are not as crisp as they should be. You can tell the Ibis is a deep maroon color with iridescent highlights of yellow and green. They are quite pretty.

The Green-winged Teal is also quite pretty, and, unfortunately, John still does not have a good picture of them.
