Yellowstone National Park Day 16: Part 2 Norris Geyser Basin

Yellowstone National Park, WY, June 2025

The first part of the day was hiking Ice Lake. The second part of the day was visiting Norris Geyser Basin.

We thought this was a short walk but it turns out to see everything it’s around a 3 mile walk. The map below is the only map around the geyser basin that doesn’t have wear spots. The current information indicates when Steamboat geyser last erupted which was April 14th, 2025. Unfortunately, we weren’t in the park to see it erupt, and eruptions cannot be predicted.

The first stop was the Museum telling the history of the Norris Geyser Basin area. I took a photos of the various boards so that you can also enjoy reading.

After all the educational information about Norris Geyser Basin, it’s time to take a stroll through the area. I did not take a picture of each feature, but I did for a lot of them. I also tried to take a picture of the information related to them. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

The first thing you can see from far away is a geyser that is blowing out steam. You can hear the pressure within the system from far away. I took a video to help better understand what I am talking about. The white steam was blowing out the entire time we were in Norris. I am guessing that we were Norris for almost 2 hours.

Throughout the walk there were signs to help us understand where we were and provided details information details about the area.

Can you see the small geyser squirting up about 2 feet of water?

I was shocked that flowers could grow in the area. In one small section, the flowers were thriving.

There were tons of small holes with boiling water coming out of them. I thought you might like to see them.
