Yellowstone National Park Day 28

Yellowstone National Park, WY, June 2025

Today was a recovery and catch up day. We got the blog up to date. We relaxed. We went owl hunting. The only thing I can say about our owl hunting is that owls are in no fear of becoming endangered due to our efforts.

There were owls reported near Bridge Bay and Fishing Bridge earlier this season. With the influx of people, there is no evidence that they have stayed in the area.

At Bridge Bay, we drove through the campground to see how the rabble lives. Tiny campsites. No utilities. No showers. That is not the life for us.

Bridge Bay has a marina, so we stopped there to look. We found another snakebird, so it is probably three individuals that we have seen. This is also the closest we have been to one. At the closest, the bird was only about 30 feet from the pier.

There were mosquitoes-a-plenty, so there were swallows. At least three kinds flew by us: tree swallows, cliff swallows, and barn swallows. It was too dark to get good pictures; also, cameras focus slower in low light. You can identify a barn swallow from the long split tail. You can identify cliff swallows from the dead staring eyes. Wait, that was sharks. Ignore that. You can identify cliff swallows from the mud nests and white mark on the head. We did find cliff swallow nests on lower eves at the marina, so you get another creepy insect bird picture.

Since we heard no owls at Bridge Bay, we went to the Fishing Bridge intersection. There was a young adult male elk with 3 points, but no owls. Our being at the pull-off did cause three other cars to stop and look. At least no one asked if it was a bear!
