Have you ever lost a tooth – pulled or surgically removed?
If yes, then you will relate to this post.
Mackie is our 13 to 15 year old kitty that just had another tooth removed. Some vets wondered if Mackie chews on rocks. He doesn’t. Most of the time Mackie doesn’t even chew his hard kibble.
Mackie received a Certificate of Bravery for his vet visit. Along with before and after pictures of his teeth. The top 2 pictures are from before the cleaning, and the bottom 2 pictures are after the cleaning. You will notice another tooth missing. Fortunately, you only need one hand to count his remaining teeth.

In case you are wondering about the cat teeth cleaning process, the cat is taken to the vet in the morning and dropped off. The vet will knock the cat out with some kind of drug, and then start the teeth cleaning process. Because Mackie is old with kidney issues, Mackie also received fluids to flush the drugs out of his system.
When a tooth is removed, the cat receives an antibiotic and pain meds that should last up to 3 days.
Based on past experience, the pain meds work great for the first 8 hours because Mackie will be hypnotized by the fireplace flames or water fountain for hours and hours. It’s been 3 days since the tooth removal and Mackie is doing great. He is no longer stoned, and he is now eating food. We are giving him more soft food than hard food. Although, hard food might not matter since he swallows without chewing.
Next year, our plan is to ask the vet to prorate his cleaning based on the number of teeth 🙂
