Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center (2/4)

The Space Hangar is about one-third the size of the Aviation Hangar, and we only spent about fifteen minutes in it. We spent more time at the restoration area and walking the Aviation Hangar. We probably need to go back and spend more time in that room; there are some neat displays. There might be more spacecraft pictures in the selfie and panorama post than here.

As a reminder, here is the map of the Space Hangar from two locations. Why two locations? Because we went to both spots? As you can see from the “you are here” marker, the maps were at least 50 feet from each other.

At the entrance to the Space Hangar, they have a space suit. Kate got really excited about taking a selfie in the space suit, until she realized that she could not move her arms in the suit. John had to take a picture of her in the space suit.

As it turns out, the space suit was NOT a selfie station. It was a historical artifact, and Kate had to do some fast talking* to avoid getting a ticket or throw out.

One of the big attractions at the Udvar-Hazy Center is the Space Shuttle Discovery in the Space Hangar. In these pictures, you can compare the height of the shuttle to people.

The tungsten lighting under the shuttle makes it look like a re-entry picture.

Up the stairs to the left of the shuttle, they have what looks a a mobile (or wind chimes) made of old satellites. It looks like something you might hang over the crib of … what do you call those things? Nerdlings? Baby nerds? … Oh, yes! The children of smart people.

We took these sign photos, but we did not take a picture of the actual item.

Here, you can at least see the cart of the Gemini Paraglider in the upper left.

For unknown reasons, they have the Close Encounters of the Third Kind mother ship model in the Space Hangar.

Next is the restoration bays. We do not remember the restoration bays being open the last time we were here, so they distracted us from the Space Hangar.

* The fast talking was really convincing John to take the time to Photoshop her into the space suit. He drew the line at sending the cats to space.
