Mail Fraud and Baseball

Smithsonian National Postal Museum, DC, June 2026

I’m not a huge sports fan. Typically, Tim has more fun trying to figure out just what I don’t know. I like to spend time learning about things that I find interesting, like mail fraud. In this case, sports and the United State Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) intermix. Needless to say, I learned something about sports and mail fraud.

This USPS exhibit had a section dedicated to baseball and mail fraud. Apparently, when you try to scam someone and mail the scammed item to them, you have committed mail fraud. The USPIS is responsible for investigating mail fraud.

The Smithsonian has booklets that included the history of the US Postal Inspection Service (USPIS). Here’s a link about the USPIS history: https://www.uspis.gov/about/history-of-uspis
