Comlara Park, IL, August 2026
We just dropped Mackie off at the vet for surgery to address his bad teeth and potential abscess from the bad teeth. On the way back to the trailer, we went to the Comlara Park Spillway. I was curious to see how rain last night and another flood warning impacted the spillway.
The water was definitely lower to the point where blue herons were standing at the end of the water. The water was not flowing over one of the spillway gates. The width of the river afterwards was lower and still moving, but not as fast as August 15th.

In total we counted 9 blue herons. How many can you find in the picture below?

Last time we saw maggots all over the structure and water was flowing over the spillway. This time, no maggots and water only spilling over the main spillway not the side gate.

I talked to one park resident who said that most of the time river past the spillway doesn’t exist. A river or small stream has been present our entire stay which was 4 weeks.
