Greenway Bike Trail

Sioux Falls, SD, August 2025

I started out the day watching the birds from the back window. We had quite the variety. Unfortunately, Mackie slept through it.

Sioux Falls is about 30 miles from Lake Vermillion State Recreation Area and is the largest town in South Dakota. Throughout the town runs the Greenway Bike Trail. The trail is over 19 miles long and goes to many of the parks and attractions.

We decided to ride the trail on one of the warmer days since walking would be less comfortable than riding. We started at Legacy Park and ended 4.5 miles later in Sertoma Park. The trail went along a river and then a canal.

We finally saw our first ducks in South Dakota. They weren’t wood ducks. We think they were mallards with a few ducklings. We also saw a couple great blue herons and finally a red squirrel with big bushy tail. This is the first large squirrel we have seen in South Dakota. We also saw 1 white tail bunny that was really skittish.

The parking area had a bike skills test area. I was not courageous enough to try it. John picks on me for closing my eyes when riding the bike when scared. I can see eyes closed, broken leg and never living it down. 🙂 John on the other hand is way more courageous. Unfortunately, John soon discovered the test your skills is meant for a smaller bike because one of the test involved going up and down 3 hills. The hills were too close together and John’s peddle touches the wood boards. So, John was not able to go over the mounds.

When we arrived home, we ate supper and relaxed. Mackie found his favorite spot, which was in the sun, next to John, getting pet. Cleo on the other hand was lying next to me on the bench.
